Possessive pronouns agree in gender and number with the noun possessed.
Pedro tiene sus cartas, pero Ana no tiene las suyas.
Pedro has his cards, but Ana doesn't have hers.
The possessive pronoun forms may also be used as adjectives modifying a noun for emphasis, in direct address, and in exclamations.
¡Dios mío!/My God!
Algunas ideas suyas son buenas./Some ideas of his are good.
After the verb ser the article is usually omitted. When the article is used, it indicates emphasis.
Estos ejercicios son míos./These exercises are mine.
The definite articles el, la, los, las, are always used with the possessive pronouns, except after ser. They may be used after ser for emphasis.
